چکیده

We investigate in this work a local version of the theory of fractal strings and associated geometric zeta functions. Such a generalization allows to describe the asymptotic behaviour of a “fractal” set in the neighborhood of any of its points. We give basic properties and several examples illustrating the possible range of situations concerning in particular the evolution of the local complex dimensions along the set and the relation between local and global zeta functions. 1 Background and Motivations The theory of Fractal Strings has been developed over the past years by M. Lapidus and co-workers in a series of papers, including [7, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, 5]. See also the book [10] and the more recent works [11, 15, 16]. A fractal string L is simply a bounded open subset Ω of R. Ω may be written as a disjoint union of intervals Ij = (aj , bj), i.e. Ω = ⋃∞ j=1 Ij . For our purpose, no distinction needs to be made between the open set and the sequence of lengths of the intervals that define it. By abuse of notation, we will thus speak of the fractal string as L = {`j}j=1, where `j are the lengths of the Ij . Thus, a possible definition of a fractal string is: Definition 1. A fractal string L is an at-most countable, non-increasing sequence of lengths whose sum is finite. To a fractal string is associated a complex function, the (geometric) zeta function of L: Definition 2. The geometric zeta function of a fractal string L is

Random fractal strings: their zeta functions, complex dimensions and spectral asymptotics

In this paper a string is a sequence of positive non-increasing real numbers which sums to one. For our purposes a fractal string is a string formed from the lengths of removed sub-intervals created by a recursive decomposition of the unit interval. By using the so called complex dimensions of the string, the poles of an associated zeta function, it is possible to obtain detailed information ab...

The Geometry of p-Adic Fractal Strings: A Comparative Survey

We give a brief overview of the theory of complex dimensions of real (archimedean) fractal strings via an illustrative example, the ordinary Cantor string, and a detailed survey of the theory of p-adic (nonarchimedean) fractal strings and their complex dimensions. Moreover, we present an explicit volume formula for the tubular neighborhood of a p-adic fractal string Lp, expressed in terms of th...

Contemporary MathematicsComplex Dimensions of Fractal Strings

We put the theory of Dirichlet series and integrals in the geometric setting of`fractal strings' (one-dimensional drums with fractal boundary). The poles of a Dirichlet series thus acquire the geometric meaning of`complex dimensions' of the associated fractal string, and they describe the geometric and spectral oscillations of this string by means of anèxplicit formula'. We deene thèspectral op...

Nonarchimedean Cantor set and string

We construct a nonarchimedean (or p-adic) analogue of the classical ternary Cantor set C. In particular, we show that this nonarchimedean Cantor set C3 is self-similar. Furthermore, we characterize C3 as the subset of 3-adic integers whose elements contain only 0’s and 2’s in their 3-adic expansions and prove that C3 is naturally homeomorphic to C. Finally, from the point of view of the theory ...

Strings, Fractal Membranes and Noncommutative Spacetimes Strings, Fractal Membranes and Noncommutative Spacetimes

In this book, the author proposes a new approach to understand and possibly solve the Riemann Hypothesis. His reformulation builds upon earlier (joint) work on complex fractal dimensions and the vibrations of fractal strings, combined with string theory and noncommutative geometry. Accordingly, it relies on the new notion of a fractal membrane or quantized fractal string, along with the modular...
